“Lithophonie“ is one of my favorite works within a series of compositions which connect two ideas of arts in an inseparable way - fine arts and music.
Since one year now the sculptor Kassian Erhart is working with me on the idea making music with rocks.
Thus there’s a sculptor, creating sculptures which can be handled like an instrument on the one hand and a composer writing music for rocks on the other. All sculptures are built with rocks you can find in the Tyrolean Alps.
The result of our common project is a hybrid, sculpture and music as well.
The temporary outcome (the work will be continued) now are sculptures which work similar to windinstruments (wood- and brassinstruments), to strings (“granite violin“) and percussion instruments.
All instruments were designed and constructed in close collaboration with the musicians of ticom. Thus it was a method of working for both sculptor and composer which is quite rare in music.
As a composer you get used to handle a lot of familiar possibilities - technical demands of the instruments, range of pitches, colors in sound, dynamics etc... - all of them well known, tested and confirmed. It is an extraordinary provocation to do a composition for instruments which are reduced in their possibilities in such way, far away from any idea of beeing perfect.
